Making a Difference

So often in our feral cat rescue (Marin Friends of Ferals) it feels like we’re barely making a dent in controlling breeding. You think rabbits and mice are prolific baby-makers? Well, unaltered felines are like polygamists with 5 kids per wife, or maybe the Duggar family (19 Kids and Counting). They have no Off switch.

The Duggar’s

But the difference with cats is that they can’t control their mating and subsequent reproducing. No, I’m afraid this one’s on us. People refuse to spay and neuter pets for many reasons: they believe it will make the animal lazy and fat (false); some are simply against birth control; others just can’t be bothered. Here We Go Again (One Cat Closer to Crazy)

I recently blogged that I’m not a crazy cat lady because I have only one feline. To be honest, I’m more a crazy dog lady. I have three, but could easily bring home three more if not for county regulations and the likely wrath of my neighbors.crazy dog ladyBesides, my family might have me committed for evaluation of my mental stability (or instability) should I rescue more dogs. Adventures of a Not-So-Crazy Cat Lady

Crazy cat ladyI think crazy is the operative word in my blog title. I agree there definitely is something to the phrase, crazy cat lady. Believe me, in our feral cat rescue, we encounter some, how shall I put it – eccentric women (why is it always women?) whose passion for cats borders on obsession.

Now don’t get me wrong; I’m not criticizing. I think anyone who devotes themselves to making life better for four-legged creatures is commendable. But I’ve also learned there’s a fine line. Continue reading

Abra Cadabra: The Disappearing Kitten

I went to church on Sunday.

Now don’t get me wrong. This may not seem like a big deal to you, but to those who know me, it’s practically a miracle. You see, I haven’t been to the Big House in a couple years.I used to be one of those holiday church-goers. You know the type; we attend for Christmas and Easter. Then it got to where I only appeared for weddings and funerals. But I’m relatively certain last Sunday wasn’t a holy holiday and nobody I know died or got hitched. Continue reading

How I Conquered a Phobia

I think most people harbor a fear that borders on phobia. For me it’s snakes and small spaces. I understand why snakes give me the creeps, but small spaces? Maybe it’s the fear of suffocation or being trapped. Regardless, neither sound inviting to me.

I remember when we were kids, my brother put a pillow over my face as we played. I felt such terror that all rational thought left me; I screamed like I was dying. That feeling is still with me today whenever I feel confined. Continue reading
