Altered States

new and improved

New and Improved. That seems to be the trend these days concerning how we look. Nobody wants to look like themselves anymore, and no more so than in Tinseltown where performers are painfully scrutinized.

My guess is the majority of actors in Hollywood are in some sort of altered state. Now don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying they’re on drugs. Although, if we’re being honest here, and I assume we are, I’ve no doubt the green leafy stuff and the white powdery substance is as common as having a plastic surgeon on speed-dial among those who entertain us. But that’s another story for a later blog…altered states

No, what I mean by an altered state is Botox, collagen injections, liposuction, face lifts…You see, in the entertainment industry, it’s taboo to look like yourself. I’m all for doing whatever toots your horn. But the degree to which some go is baffling to me. In pursuit of new and improved, they often become unrecognizable, maybe even to themselves.

Memory? What Memory?

As you read this, I’m probably on a hiking trail in Boulder, Colorado. I’m no doubt stopping for a swig of water and wondering if the view from the Royal Arch Trail is worth the 3.2 mile hike rated as “difficult.” My guess is it will be. Anyway, since I’m there and not here, I didn’t get my blog written in time to post today. Therefore, here’s the encore presentation of a blog I wrote 2 years ago but which is none-the-less just as relevant today (sadly) as it was then. Enjoy and I’ll catch ya next week!

I can’t really say my memory is not what it used to be because mine has always been pathetic. Some people are fortunate to recall childhood memories, like who came to their ninth birthday party. I don’t even remember being nine, let alone a party. It’s gone – completely obliterated from the deep crevices of my gray matter.

Since my past has shaped the person I am today, it would be nice if I had a tad more recall. Bits and pieces of my life may be buried in the corners of my mind, but they’re stuck like Super Glue and not about to budge. For some, just mentioning a name or word from the past is all it takes to release the floodgates and their memories spill out with perfect recall. Those people annoy me. Continue reading

How to Become Old as the Hills

Just about everyone has an opinion on how people can live to a ripe old age. Old as the hills is often used to describe one well into their 90s. That saying must be getting lots of use these days since people living over 90 are the fastest growing segment of our population, according to a recent 60 Minutes broadcast. Can you believe that? Hard to imagine in 1900 people only lived an average of 49 years. I’d be dust for 9 years already… Continue reading

Trying to Turn Back Time

I recently made the mistake of buying a 10x magnifying mirror. I ask you, what was I thinking? There’s no good reason to buy an item that only magnifies your imperfections while accentuating  those you had no idea you even possessed. But did that stop me?magnifying mirrorLet’s face it – we live in a youth-oriented society. Wrinkles are not appreciated here like in Japan or the Philippines, where those with nooks and crannies are revered for the wisdom that comes with age (accompanied by great storytelling). Nursing homes? What are those? Continue reading
